Walnut Creek
Useful Information for Walnut Creek CA
Walnut Creek CA was indeed named after an indigenous variety of Walnut found locally, and the name has proven popular with the residents who have no plans to change it.
The town was incorporated into a city in 1914, but had a traditional early history so common for the state of California. Populated with settlers looking for available land and a better quality of life, the first commercial structure was a hotel established in 1855. It was followed soon after by a blacksmith shop and a mercantile store.
Growth was slow but steady until the arrival of the railroad in 1891.
The fertile soil and Mediterranean like climate encouraged farmers, businesses and settlers to the area in a steady stream and helped ensure the growth and prosperity of the city.
The railroad continued to serve Walnut Creek until the late 1970’s, but when the service stopped the area was left with miles and miles of abandoned track. But clever residents helped turn the track into what is now called the Iron Horse Trail used by hikers, cyclists, runners and pedestrians alike.
The Walnut Creek of today is a fast paced city with elegant restaurants and popular shopping centers that bring both tourists and residents out to enjoy a day in the California sun.
